History of McHughs

With a rich and long history stretching over 100 years, and set in the most beautiful location on Cheltenham Beach, McHugh’s is known for being one of Auckland’s top event venues, with arguably the best views Auckland has to offer.

Initially designed as tearooms back in 1913, it offered entertainment such as dancing and jazz bands through the 1920s, before hosting weddings, balls, dances, silent movie projection and political meetings in the 1930s. This continued through to the 1960s, by which time the rooms were used almost exclusively for weddings, balls and other functions, with afternoon tea served most Sundays.

John McHugh took over the lease of the building in 1981 and named it ‘McHugh’s of Cheltenham’. The building was fully refurbished with the southern corner opened up to take in the beautiful view of that end of Cheltenham Beach, and North Head. He continued the tradition of serving top-class food to locals and tourists and hosting wonderful weddings and social occasions.

With over 30 years’ experience in a number of Auckland’s international hotels, McHugh’s current Owner/Chef, Gajraj Singh Yadav (Raj), took over the business in 2016 and maintains its fabulous reputation for being a top-quality venue for weddingscelebrations and corporate events.
